Srinagar, July 20: Police today detained at least a dozen Fire and Emergency aspirants as they tried to march towards Residency Road here to protest against the delay in releasing the report of the committee probing alleged recruitment process irregularities.
The aspirants, who had gathered at the Press Enclave, voiced their disappointment with the probing committee for taking a long time to release its findings. They informed that the committee, headed by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) R K Goyal, was formed to investigate the alleged irregularities in the recruitment process, but even after 8 months, it has not made its report public.
“We have been protesting for three years. I want to ask LG Manoj Sinha, if you formed a three-member committee and asked them to submit the report within one month, why has it taken 8 months and still no report?” a protestor asked.
The aspirants also raised concerns about the intentions of the probe committee, pointing out that nearly 40 aspirants were under height requirements, and yet no height tests or proper inquiries have been conducted. “From paper leakage to the appearance of proxy candidates, everything but cheating has happened in this exam,” another aspirant said.
As the protestors sloganeering intensified, they decided to march towards Residency Road, but their efforts were thwarted by the police, who detained at least a dozen protestors and bundled them into police vans.
The protesting aspirants urged LG Manoj Sinha to investigate the delay in the committee’s report release and address the alleged bureaucratic interference in the process. They claimed that certain employees within the department were involved in blocking the release of the report and called for transparency and fairness in the recruitment process.
Around 60,000 aspirants applied for 870 posts of firemen and firemen drivers in 2013, but due to floods, the recruitment process could not be completed until today due to allegations of irregularities.
