JAMMU, Oct 29: A devastating fire damaged 12 residential flats occupied by the Kashmiri Pandit (KP) families at Purkhoo Camp area here today.
A police official said the fire erupted in one of the quarters around 1 pm mysteriously.
It later spread to other quarters, damaging several articles, including a Scooty, refrigerators, coolers, washing machines, gold, beddings, and other household items, he said, adding that the fire was controlled by the fire tenders and a team of police by 1:30 pm.
Around 5 families occupying the flats have become homeless, he added.
Migrant leader Dileep Kumar and ASKPC and KPC leaders have urged the LG and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to help rehabilitate the affected families.
“The affected families should be urgently relocated to safer Government accommodations that offer stable, secure housing to prevent future tragedies,” KPC leader Kundan Kashmiri demanded.
Meanwhile, senior BJP leader and MLA Jammu North Sham Lal Sharma visited the fire ravaged area along with Tehsildar Jammu North, Naib Tehsildar, SHO Domana and other sectoral officers and assured the affected KP families that he will provide them with the best possible support and assistance from the Government to help revive their livelihoods.
