KATHUA/ SAMBA, Apr 25: Fire broke out in wheat fields in a vast area in Kathua and Samba districts today damaging the standing crops worth several lakhs of rupees belonging to various farmers of the twin districts.
As per reports, about 250 kanals of standing wheat crops which was to be harvested within days was turned into ashes in devastating fire that broke out in villages Pumbwal, Nagari and Barnoti and Badala villages of Kathua district.
The cause of fire was not known. While wheat crop spreading over 200 kanals of land in villages of Pumbwal, Nagari and Barnoti was damaged in the fire, in village Badala alone standing crop over 50 kanals of land was damaged in mysterious fire.
The farmers whose crop was destroyed in fire included Gulzar Singh, Ravinder Singh,Davender Singh . Meanwhile a Kacha house was also damaged in fire belonging to Sardari Lal, resident of village Changal in Kathua.
The farmers asked the district administration to assess the loss and issue ex-gratia relief for the families for their sustenance as except agriculture they have no other source of livelihood. They also asked the insurance companies to survey the losses and release compensation.
Reports said one Kanal of wheat crop gutted under fire at Village Pakhri sector Ramgarh in district Samba today.
The fire broke out in village Pakhri, Sector Ramgarh in district Samba this afternoon suddenly in the field of one Ram Lal, son of Thandu Ram, as a result of which one Kanal standing wheat crop of farmer was totally turned into ashes.
Later the fire control team reached on spot and controlled the fire from spreading in other nearby fields.
