Fire destroys property worth crores in north Kashmir

BARAMULLA: Property worth crores of rupees was reduced to ashes in a devastating fire incident in the frontier district of Kupwara, official sources said on Thursday.
Fire broke out in a shopping complex at Lawoosa Naugam, Handwara, in north Kashmir district of Kupwara late last night. However, before the fire tenders could reach the spot, fire spread to entire shopping complex and nearby buildings in the security zone.
About two dozen shops besides post office, Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) and engineering store of Army were gutted in the incident. Loss will be in crores, the sources said, adding that the cause of fire was not known. Police have registered a case and initiated proceedings.
Meanwhile, shopkeepers, who had reached the spot within half an hour of fire incident, alleged that they were not allowed to enter the area by the security forces. (AGENCIES)
