Fire engulfs vast area of forest in Purmandal

SAMBA, May 30 : Fire broke out in the forest of Bandua, in Purmandal area of Samba district today, causing a panic among people living nearby the forest and wild life in the forest area. Besides, millions of rupees in the form of forest produce have been destroyed while a large number of wild animals were also killed in fire.
Though fire has engulfed a vast area of forest but till last reports came in no steps were taken on the part of administration to control the fire and stop it from spreading to adjoining areas.
In the adjoining village of Motalihan Khurd the house Sukhdev Singh’s which was nearby forest area was completely destroyed in the fire. His all house hold goods, ration, clothes etc were turned in to ashes due to devastating fire. Local people said that the fire broke out in the forest and engulfed at least 20 kilometers area. Many animals have been killed in the fire. People said that officials of Fire Brigade were also informed but to no avail due to which fire spread to a vast area.
People said that the fire is spreading to more areas of forest and if not controlled, it can endanger the adjoining villages. The locals said that this forest burns every year.
In this year under the MGNREGA scheme plants of Jamuna, Shisham, Khaira etc. were planted. Five lakh rupees were spent on this work. All those plants were destroyed in the fire, the people added and held the Forest Department authorities responsible for the same.
