Firm Determination

Lovely Sharma

We have read this marvelous story of Kauravas and Pandavas, ”Chidiya ki Aankh”- in which Guru Dronacharya takes the final test (examination) of his students skill or we can say artistry or finesse. He hanged a toy sparrow on the top of a tree and called his students one by one. He asked his each student what does each of you see on the tree. One of them said that he is seeing the tree and other one said that only sky is visible to him, another said that he can see only tree or a toy sparrow. So, none of them except Arjuna got the permission to prove his skill. You know why only Arjuna was permitted to show his finesse? Because, it was only Arjuna who said that he can see nothing except the eye of the sparrow and this is the determination.
“Teevra Samveganamasanna”, (Patanjali yogsutra 1.21) Means who vyakti, jo apne abhyasa mein dridhata evam sankalpa se rat rahata hai, nishchya hi lakshya paata hai; or we can say that one who invlolves in his efforts whole heartedly and with firm determination ; surely succeeds.
Determination means the firmness of purpose or intention. Basically, it is the strength of your will and focus to remain steadfast in your efforts. It means having the ability to stay on course, remain focused on your goals, stand up to the problems and obstacles with conviction, stay fixed and firm about your decisions, solutions and intensions; this forces and makes you able to apply the power of your will to your desires and dreams with resolve , fortitude, faith and courage. In today’s busy life, the greatest gift which one can give to oneself is the power of determination without it you are merely a spectator in the drama of your life. The power of determination is the one and one quality that makes a difference between a loser and winner; a leader and a follower.
Due to the lack of determination, the dreams remain only dreams and they cannot become the reality, the question is not, how big dreams you see; the point is , how great efforts you put to make your dreams a reality.
According to Swami Vivekananda – “Take up one idea. Make that idea your life – think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success, that is the way great spiritual giants are produced.”
Determination is an important factor in the overall success or failure of a person’s efforts. It is rightly said that success will follow you, if you work with firm determination and perfection. To be truly determined, a person must be passionate about his work. So, “Real leaders are ordinary people with extraordinary determination.”
The world is full of successful persons who became successful due to their determination. The missile man Dr. A.P.J Kalam has rightly said, “Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough.” We know the story of Eklavya of Mahabharata. Eklavya, the son of a poor hunter, wanted to learn archery to save the deer in the forest that were being hunted by the leopards. So, he went to Dronacharya (a master of advanced military arts) and requested him to him archery. But Dronacharya refused to teach him, he quietly returned back; resolute in his determination to learn archery and he practiced faithfully in front of idol of Guru Dronacharya and became the master of art of archery. So if you want to excel in your field and want to achieve the goal, focus on it, work on it, sleep with it, dream of it.
