Srinagar, June 23: The Department of Forensic Medicine at Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag successfully concluded the first-ever Virtual Autopsy Conference at its main campus in Dialgam.
The conference, which was the first of its kind in the Union Territory of J&K, highlighted the department’s pivotal role in promoting advancements in forensic medicine.
Dr Azia Manzoor, Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine and chief organizer of the conference, provided an overview of virtual autopsies.
Also known as “Virtopsy” or virtual post-mortem examination, virtual autopsies are non-invasive methods of examining a body using imaging technology instead of traditional physical dissection.
“The process involves capturing detailed images of the body through various imaging modalities, including computed tomography (CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and 3D surface scanning. Virtual autopsies offer a valuable alternative when facing challenges in convincing the family members of deceased individuals to undergo traditional autopsies.”
Dr. (Prof) Tariq Syed Qureshi expressed his gratitude to all the delegates and participants while congratulating the organizing team for conducting this groundbreaking Virtual Autopsy Conference, the first of its kind in the region.
Dr Owais H. Dar, Media Coordinator of GMC Anantnag, said that over 200 delegates attended the conference, including participants from J&K and other parts of the country, particularly from North India.
Renowned experts such as Dr Ash Govind, CEO of Virtual Autopsy UK, Dr Hemant Naik, CMO of Virtual Autopsy India, Dr Yadukal S., Dr. (Prof) Sajad Majid Qazi, and Dr. (Prof) Sheikh Mushtaq Ahmad, were among the prominent attendees.
The conference was also well-represented by various faculty members, consultants, medical officers, paramedics, and police officials.
