LEH, Mar 23: Neelam Mishra, the First Lady of UT Ladakh, inaugurated a sanitary pad vending machine at the Tourist Information Centre in Leh on Saturday, marking an important step toward improving menstrual hygiene in public spaces.
The event began with a welcome address by Shashanka Ala, Secretary of Rural and Social Welfare, who emphasized the importance of ensuring access to safe and hygienic menstrual products, especially for women tourists and locals.
He praised the initiative as a crucial part of addressing menstrual hygiene challenges in public areas.
Dr Disket, a gynecologist, led an informative session on menstrual health, discussing the importance of proper care and encouraging the community to break the stigma surrounding menstruation.
In her speech, Neelam Mishra highlighted the need to remove societal taboos around menstruation and encourage women to prioritize their health.
She emphasized that access to clean and eco-friendly menstrual products is essential for gender equality and women’s empowerment.
This initiative, she said, also supports Ladakh’s vision of a cleaner environment and a healthier, more empowered community.
The vending machines are expected to benefit both residents and the growing number of tourists, providing convenient access to sanitary products in public spaces.
The project also promotes the use of biodegradable pads made by local women, helping to reduce plastic waste and support women-led businesses.
The event was attended by several key officials, including Vikram Singh Malik, Secretary of Tourism, Padma Angmo, Assistant Director of Tourism, and Rigzin Wangmo Lachic, President of the All Ladakh Hotel and Guest House Association.
