First meeting of Anti-Ragging Committee of JU held

JAMMU, May 29: The first meeting of Anti-Ragging Committee of Jammu University was held under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor, Prof MPS Ishar. Several members of civil society attended the meeting organized by Dean Students Welfare and offered full support to curb the menace of ragging.
In the meeting, Prof Ishar highlighted the key points of the Supreme Court guidelines vis-à-vis checking the menace of ragging, which claims lives of large number of students every year across the country. He said that heads of the educational institutions and the local police have greater role to play in checking the ragging.
“The Jammu University administration will take all possible steps to curb ragging”, he said and asked the Anti Ragging Committee to take required steps well before the commencement of next academic session.
Prof NK Tripathi, Dean Students Welfare, in his address, highlighted the adverse affects of ragging. He said that those indulging in ragging bring bad name to their respective educational institutions. He said that Anti-Ragging Committee of the Jammu University was constituted strictly as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu, Prabhat Singh assured full support to the Anti Ragging Committee to curb the menace of ragging while as President Bar Association Jammu (BAJ), B S Slathia assured every possible help from the Bar to keep check on ragging.
President, Chamber of Commerce, Y V Sharma said that almost all countries of the world have enacted stern laws that ban ragging but sadly India, has not been able to free itself from the clutches of this inhuman practice. “Stern steps are needed to get rid of this evil”, he added.
Prof Rekha Choudhary, Dean Research Studies, Prof Sarla Kohli, Prof Champa Sharma, Prof Rita Jitendra, Prof Veena Gupta and Prof Jasbir Singh, Chairman, Campus Cultural Committee also spoke on the occasion.
