Jammu, Mar 27: Dr Nikhil Mahajan along with his team successfully performed rare Carotid Artery Stenting in a 70 years old post paralytic atrack patient at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Hospital, Kakryal. The patient was admitted to the hospital with an ischemic stroke. However, he fully recovered after performance of the surgery.
Explaining the disease, Dr. Mahajan said,”The carotid arteries are located on each side of the neck and carry blood and oxygen to the brain. Over time, these arteries may become diseased with fat deposition, and plaque can build up on the inside, leading to narrowing of the vessels (carotid artery stenosis). This patient had suffered a stroke with weakness involving left side of the body. His carotid angiogam showed 90% stenosis of the Right Artery of the brain (Internal Carotid Artery).”
Explaining the procedure, he said, “Carotid angioplasty and stenting are procedures that open clogged arteries to restore blood flow to the brain.A small filter basket (Embolic Protection Device) is inserted past the diseased area to catch any plaque that might be broken off during the procedure to minimize risk of stroke. Then a stent is placed through the area where the plaque is located to open the artery. The filter that has any dislodged pieces of plaque is then removed.”
