First World Food Safety Day celebrated

JAMMU, June 7: First Ever, “World Food Safety Day” was celebrated today with great enthusiasm in Jammu.
To mark the occasion, two programmes were organized by the Food Safety Wing of Municipal Limit Jammu. The first programme was organized in collaboration with the management of Hotel Cygnett Park Asia at their facility.
The programme was organized for various food business operators such as Dhaba Walas, Halwai Association, Bakery Association, Hoteliers, Retailers and various small restaurant owners across the city. The function started with lighting of ceremonial lamp, followed by oath ceremony which was taken by all the participants to provide safe and whole some food right from production to serving the customers.
Another programme for manufacturers was organized in collaboration with Beverages factories at Gangyal, Jammu. Speaking on the occasion, Assistant Commissioner, Food Safety, Municipal Limits, Jammu laid special focus on maintenance of personal hygiene, producing safe food, keeping the surroundings neat and clean, checking fresh fruits and vegetables and looking food labels on each food article before purchasing.
Meanwhile, “We The Human – Forum for Nature and Mankind” organized a talk on Food Safety under the chairmanship of K Y S Manhas, Retired Principal/Secretary Law and Vice Chairman of the Trust. Speaking on the occasion, Prem Singh, founder member of the Trust said that due to slackness shown by the Food Safety Officers, many old famous eateries especially barbeque/cooked non vegetarian food shops and bakeries are being run from unhygienic dingy and unclean narrow shops/booths.
K Y S Manhas said that despite a ban, fruit and vegetable suppliers, vendors and retailers are still selling fruits and vegetables with stickers on them. “The Food Safety Officers need to take action against such malpractices including artificial ripening of fruits especially mangoes, papaya and bananas using hazardous & impermissible chemicals and procedures,” he added.
