Cochlear Implant is an implantable bio medical electronic device which helps children/adults with severe to profound Sensorineural hearing loss, to perceive the sound through an electrical signal. It consists of an internal part called Cochlear implant which consists of an receiver stimulator and an electrode array and an external component called Sound Processor which has microphones to pick up sound and send the signal to inner implant through Radio Frequency.
The surgeons involved in the procedure highlighted the importance of early detection of hearing loss through universal new born hearing screening to identity deafness early. They stressed that this is an important so that early intervention can be done. Since the area of brain involved with listening and language develops fastest during first 3-4 years, so earlier the treatment, better the results.
