SRINAGAR, Feb 24: Even as the weather is generally cloudy in the Kashmir Valley, flight operations from the Srinagar International airport have begun with an improvement in visibility, authorities said on Thursday.
A number of flights were delayed and two have been cancelled. On Wednesday, all flights were cancelled.
“Visibility has improved to 1,500 meters. Flight operations are commencing, Srinagar Airport Director Kuldeep Singh said.
Heavy snowfall was experienced on Wednesday. The Meteorological Department has forecast possibile light to moderate rain or snow showers at a few places in Jammu and Kashmir in the next 24 hours.
There is no forecast of any major snowfall till the end of February.
The Srinagar-Jammu highway was put through NH-44 from Udhampur to Banihal except for some stretches where only one way movement is possible.
All the stranded Kashmir-bound trucks have crossed the Navayug tunnel, an official said.
Many far flung areas including Kupwara-Keran, Karnah, Machhil and Bandipora-Gurez roads remained closed due to accumulation of snowfall.
Meanwhile, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation has pressed into service men and machines to clear snow from interior roads and by-lanes of Srinagar.
Power supply to most areas in the Kashmir valley including Srinagar were being restored after the transmission lines and poles were damaged.
Most areas of Srinagar were without electricity since Wednesday amid snowfall and cold conditions.
Power Distribution Corp Ltd’s Aijaz Ahmad Dar said at least 60 per cent damage occurred across Kashmir due to snowfall. (AGENCIES)
