SRINAGAR : A flood alert has been issued in south Kashmir where about 30 villages were inundated following increase in the water level in all major rivers and nallahs due to heavy rains during the past 24 hours.
However, there was no immediate threat of flood in Srinagar though the water level is still increasing because of heavy rains since yesterday.
The Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) department said the water level was still increasing because of torrential rains.
He said the water has increased about 30 villages in south Kashmir district of Kulgam and Shopian. “We have also issued flood alert in south Kashmir, including Kulgam, Shopian, Anantnag and Pulwama,” he said adding the water level will witness further increase during the next 24 hours.
He said the entire field staff of I&FC department have been directed to report to their respective areas and keep a close watch on water level in the rivers, including river Jehlum and its tributaries.
Jehlum River at Sangam, Ram Munshi Bagh and Sonawari was still below normal. However, the water level was increasing as rain water from mountains in south Kashmir will reach here during the next 24 hours.
Meanwhile, all major roads in the city were submerged, badly affecting pedestrian and vehicular movement. At some places shopkeepers closed their establishments after the main roads were under more than a feet of water.
Traffic jams were reported from almost all parts of the city, including civil lines and uptown. (AGENCIES)
