This has reference to the news item ‘J&K to get modern flood forecasting system’ DE Jan 19, 2015.
As the State is prone to seasonal and flash floods, there is certainly need to have a mechanism in place which can warn beforehand the danger of a flood. As the September floods in the State could not be predicted, they caused extensive damage in the State. The State witnessed huge loss of men and material. Had there been a flood forecasting system in place, the damage could have been minimised to a large extent.
It is a welcome step that the Central Water Commission is setting up such facilities at about 25 sites in Kashmir valley. Hopefully, these sites would prove to be quite effective in predicting flash floods.
