Jammu, Nov 19 : Pradesh Congress Committee and its various frontal organizations paid floral tributes to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 97th birth anniversary today.
A function in this connection was held at PCC headquarters Shahidi Chowk today, where several senior party leaders and other functionaries paid their tributes to Indira Gandhi. Thakur Hari Singh, PCC vice president presided over the function. G S Bali, Minister for CAPD, Transport and Technology from Himachal Pradesh was guest of honour on the occasion.
While paying floral tributes, PCC leaders described Late Mrs Gandhi as a dynamic and visionary leader who remained committed to the secular and socialist ideals of the party and worked for the welfare of the poor and the downtrodden in the country. She launched various programmes for the upliftment of the poor and the weaker sections of the society. The country progressed on all fronts under her leadership. She sacrificed her life for the unity and integrity of the country. She was known for her bold decisions and she led the country to victory during the 1971 war, leading to creation of Bangladesh and the surrender of over 90 thousand Pakistani troops before the Indian forces, ignoring the threats of United States.
She brought into existence the historical ‘Shimla Agreement’, which committed Pakistan for settlement of all out standing issues through bilateral dialogue. She successfully handled the foreign policy and remained the Chairperson of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), leading the country to the newer heights in the community of nations.
The leaders recalled her numerous achievements as Prime Minister and as president of the Congress party who always cared a lot for the workers of the party. Her decision to nationalize the banks and discontinuing privy purses to the former rulers of Indian princely states were revolutionary steps amid at equitable distribution of resources.
Prominent among those who attended the function included Dharam Paul Sharma Ex-MP, Indu Pawar-MLA and president Pradesh Mahila Congress, Chuni Lal Bhat, Maheshwar Singh, Manmanmohan Singh, S R Sudhir, Lalita Sharma, HS Mehta, Ashwani Puri, Pawan Raina, Neeraj Gupta, Shashi Sharma, Gurdarshan Singh, Mian Nazir Ahmed, Madan Lal Malagar, Padamni Langeh and Sushma Choudhary.
To commemorate former Late Gandhi’s birth anniversary, a meeting was held at Ramban, today. Arun Singh Raju, president DCC Ramban presided over the function. It was attended by Mahaval Mishra- EX-MP, Anil Chopra-president District Congress Committee Jammu (Urban), Ashwani Sharma (Handa), Shakeel Bhagat, Farooq Choudhary, M.A. Lone, Irfan Haider and others.
Paying floral tributes to Indira Gandhi the speakers described her as a dynamic leader who was always committed to the welfare of the poor and the downtrodden in the country. The country progressed on all fronts under her leadership. She firmly believed that secularism is the basic strength of our nation and fought against the communal forces in the country. She will be remembered for her numerous contributions and her supreme sacrifice for the unity and integrity of the country.
NSUI also paid rich tributes to Late Gandhi on her birth anniversary at Poonch which was attended by several NSUI leaders.
The program was hosted by senior NSUI leader Naresh Digra. Paying rich tributes to Indira Gandhi, Mr Digra said that country has attained several heights under the prime-ministership of Indira Gandhi. She was a lady with a broad vision for the development of nation and had always worked for the upliftment of weaker sections of society.
Congress Seva Dal celebrated birth anniversary of Indra Gandhi in a function held at Gandhi Nagar here today. Balvinder Singh Sambyal, State president of Congress Seva Dal chaired the function. He described Indira Gandhi a dynamic personality. Sambyal said that best way to pay tributes to the great leader is to fulfill her dreams by the Congressmen. Kishtwar unit of Congress and J&K Freedom Fighters Association also paid tributes to late Indira Gandhi, Rani Luxmi Bhai in a different functions organised today.
