AKHNOOR, Sept 12: Floral tributes were paid to Martyr Lieutenant Thakur Dass Sharma on his 55th day of martyrdom In Kalidhar, Nowshera sector while defending borders during 1965 Indo-Pak war.
In this connection, a function was held at the memorial of Lieut Thakur Dass at Akhnoor were SDM, Gopal Singh was the chief guest while SDPO Akhnoor Ajay Sharma, Deepesh Singh President Akhnoor Municipal Council and former MLA Akhnoor Rajiv Sharma besides other prominent persons of the area were also present.
The tribute ceremony started with garlanding of the statue of Martyr by chief guest and others and chanting of National Anthem by the gathering. The speakers described Thakur Dass as brave Army officer and outstanding sports person. Praising the valiant Army officer, the chief guest lauded the spirit of patriotism of the martyr for the supreme sacrifice while defending the borders of the country.
Renowned Social worker Satya Pal Saraf, DK Kapoor and S K Sharma- senior members of Akhnoor Sports Club were also present on the occasion and paid their respect to the great sportsperson and martyr, Thakur Dass. Several retired Army officers and family members of the Martyrs also paid their tributes to the Martyr. A large number of prominent citizens of Akhnoor area also joined the tribute ceremony.
Earlier, D K Kapoor president Akhnoor Sports Club welcomed the guests and then threw light on the life history of Thakur Dass Sharma and his contributions in the sports field and while serving Army. He said that since 1966 Akhnoor Sports Club is maintaining the Memorial of Thakur Dass at Akhnoor. He said Lieutenant Thakur Dass has remained a source of inspiration for the youth of Akhnoor area. Dr Ramesh Kashyap, vice president of the Club extended vote of thanks.
