Focus on Visual Arts: 49th State Art Exhibition opens at Kala Kendra

JAMMU, Jan 22: Providing an opportunity to the Visual Artists of the State to showcase their latest creative expressions for public appreciation and critical evaluation, 49th Annual State Art Exhibition opened at Kala Kendra, here today.
Organized by Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, the seven-day exhibition was inaugurated by Shailendra Kumar, IAS, Commissioner/Secretary, Department of Tourism and Culture, as the chief guest, who also presented awards in different categories at the award ceremony, held on the occasion.
Shailendra Kumar, gave away cash prizes of Rs. 51000, each in artists category to Sat Pal Deol and Zameer Ahmed in painting section for their works titled ‘Untitled’ and The Real Life, End of the Day’, respectively. In student category, he gave away cash prizes of Rs. 10,000  to Khursheed Ahmed in painting category for his work ‘Fantasy’ and to Kanesh Panotra in sculpture category for his work ‘Sketch Book’.
In his address, Commissioner Department of Tourism & Culture, while congratulating the award winners, appreciated the efforts of the Cultural Academy for putting together such an impressive Exhibition. He also directed to give assistance to encourage upcoming artists and deserving artists.
Haroon Rashid, Secretary, Cultural Academy, in his welcome address, stated that for 2012-13 State Art Awards, about 110 works were received and out of these 106 exhibits were selected by the Adjudicating Committee comprising of two experts from outside the State for the competition. Of these, the award winning art pieces were selected. Arvinder Singh Amn, additional secretary, presented a vote of thanks. The function conducted by Anil
Tikku was attended by large number of senior painters, sculptors, art students and members of the civil society.
The Exhibition will remain open at Kala Kendra for public viewing between 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily upto January 28, 2015.
