JAMMU/ SRINAGAR, Jan 10: While entire J&K region continued to be under the grip of severe cold, the dense fog badly affected train and air-traffic in the region.
Four flights were cancelled at Jammu airport while several morning flights were delayed while at least a dozen trains arrived late from their scheduled time today.
An official at Jammu Airport said that two morning Indigo flights at Jammu Airport were cancelled due to dense fog and poor visibility. The Indigo flights of 9.20 am and 11.25 am also could not operate from the Jammu airport today in view of bad weather.
An official of Northern Railways said that Tatanagar-Jammu Tawi train was late by 9 hours, Rajdhani by 9 hours, Malwa Express by 7 hours, Humsafar Exp by 5 hours, Begumpura Exp by 5-30 hrs, Jhelum Exp by 5-40 hrs, Himgiri by 4-40 hours, Sealdah- Kolkata by 3-30 hours, Superfast Bandra-JAT late by 3 hours, Shalimar by 2.30 hours, Pooja Exp by 2.20 hours and Hemkund Express by 2 hours from their scheduled arrival today. The departure of Begumpura Express was rescheduled and it left 3 hours late from its scheduled time from Jammu station.
Meanwhile, minimum temperature recorded a slight drop at most places but hovered above normal even as fog engulfed parts of Kashmir today.
Srinagar and parts of Kashmir were engulfed in fog this morning, reducing visibility in Srinagar and Qazigund. However, as the day progressed the visibility increased.
Srinagar recorded a low of 1.8°C against last night’s 0.9°C. Today’s minimum temperature was 3.7°C above normal for the city.
Qazigund recorded a low of minus 0.8°C against 0.2°C. Today’s minimum temperature was 2.3°C above normal for the town.
Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 3.2°C against minus 0.7°C on the previous night. Today’s minimum temperature was .8°C above normal for the place. The coldest night recorded this season in the famous tourist resort was on January 2 when mercury plunged to minus 9.6°C.
Kokernag recorded a low of minus 3.6°C against minus 0.5°C the previous night. It was 0.4°C above normal for the place.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 4.4°C against minus 2.5°C the previous night. It was 3.4°C above normal for the skiing resort that saw its coldest night this season on January 2 when minimum temperature plummeted to minus 10.0°C.
In Kupwara town, the mercury settled at 2.9°C against 0.7°C on the previous night. The temperature was 5.6°C above normal.
Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 7.6°C and minus 9.4°C respectively.
“Under the influence of fresh Western Disturbance, light to moderate rain/snow (rain in plains & light snow over higher reaches of Jammu division) most likely at most places of J&K with moderate snowfall intensity over higher reaches (isolated heavy over higher reaches of Kashmir especially Keran, Machil, Gurez, Tulail, Sonamarg, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, higher reaches of Budgam, Higher reaches of Shopian and Kulgam),” a Meteorological Department official said, adding, “The main activity is during 11th late night to 12th late night and gradual decrease thereafter.”
Kashmir is under the grip of Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day long harsh winter period that started on December 21 and will end on January 30. It is followed by a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ that occurs between January 30 and February 19 and a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bacha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 1st.
Jammu recorded some improvement in night temperature as compared to that of Monday. The Temple city today recorded a minimum temperature of 6.6 degree Celsius and a maximum 14.0 deg C. Foggy weather improved during the day but in the evening again dense clouds of fog enveloped entire Jammu city and adjoining areas. The visibility was even less than 50 metres late this evening.
Holy township of Katra recorded a minimum temperature of 7.6 deg C, Bhaderwah a minimum temperature of 3.0 deg C, Batote 4.2 degree C while Banihal had a minimum temperature of 0.8 deg C today. The day temperature at Katra was 17.9 deg C today.
