Food adulteration

Sir,
This is in reference to the news item” HC imposes Rs 30 crore penalty on companies for food adulteration” DE dated December 24, 2013. The court has given a welcome decision by imposing heavy penalties on adulterators. This is also an eye opener for those who are engaged in this heinous crime against the human beings. They are earning crores of rupees by playing with the health and lives of many people of the country. The milk is most vulnerable to adulteration. Harmful chemicals and detergents are used to prepare the most adulterated form of milk. One can well understand about the health of those children who are being served this adulterated milk. Honey is adulterated with sugar, turmeric is adulterated with coloured chalk powder and butter with oleomargarine which is a product of beef fat and similarly many other food items are not free from adulteration. Besides adulteration in food items there is also artificial colouring of the fruit and vegetables which are also injurious to health. This is not possible without the knowledge of officials responsible for checking the quality of these food items. The corruption in government functionaries is the main cause of this adulteration. After their palms are greased by the companies manufacturing these items, no action is taken against them. Government should also take action against such officials which are responsible for allowing the marketing of these adulterated items. Strict actions against the defaulters can only solve this problem to some extent.
Yours etc…
