Food crop land shrinking : Govt

SRINAGAR, Aug 27: The food crop land in the State has been shrinking in the last three decades with the Government blaming the farmers for cultivating their land for cash crops.
Minister for Agriculture Ghulam Hassan Mir today informed the Upper House in reply to a written query raised by National Conference MLC Vijay Bakaya about the shrinking area under food crop.
Mir told the house that the area under the food crop has been shrinking especially after 1980-81.
“‘The Jammu and Kashmir Prohibition on Conversion of Agriculture Land for Non-Agriculture Purposes Bill, 2011 has been piloted by the Government in Legislative Assembly to prevent conversion of agriculture purposes,” Mir said over plans of the Government to check the trend.
He also said that to enhance agriculture productivity various interventions are being implemented viz distribution of seeds of high yielding variety of seeds, fertilizers/pesticides, agriculture through various centrally sponsored scheme/state plan.
“Micro credit is also provided through Kisan Credits cards to about six lakh farmers in the state. Infrastructure of 51 state agriculture farms is also being strengthened under NABARD/Special Task Force, funds in a phased manner,” he said.
