SRINAGAR, Apr 27: The Food Safety Department sealed at least 13 food business outlets and collected a fine of around Rs 2 lakhs from them for violating the Food Safety and Standards Act in Srinagar.
The spokespersons of the department said in view of Eid-ul-Fitter, they increased market checking, and in the last seven days 13 food business operators, mostly bakers, have been sealed, and bakery items found unfit for human consumption worth thousands of rupees have been destroyed on the spot.
“Adjudicating Officer, Additional District Commissioner Srinagar imposed a fine of Rs 1, 76,500 on 15 food business operators for failing to comply with the various provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act,” he said.
He said that food business operators, particularly bakers and confectionery manufacturers, poultry sellers and butchers have been directed to maintain high standards of hygiene, failing which stern action under relevant laws of the Food Safety and Standards Act will be taken against offenders. “The department is currently assigning hygiene ratings to all food manufacturers, particularly bakeries and confectionery units, and the process will be completed soon,” he said.
