Forest under threat

Sir,
This has reference to the news item ‘J&K protecting’ green gold from mafia with frail limbs’ DE Oct 5.
During last 25 years, the forests in the State became a casualty of Government indifference and militancy. In other words, it was a golden period for mafia to mint money from forest wealth. Since there was no supervision, these forests were cut ruthlessly by mafia in connviance with forest officials. No effort was spared to ruin these forests. Protection of forest is still not a priority with the Government as can be inferred from the news item.
The Forest Department has always expressed its inability to take care of this wealth on the alibi of having shortage of manpower and infrastructure. The incidents of man-animal conflict is a result of denudation of forests. A large number of human beings, as well as animal have lost their lives in this conflict. We can protect this wealth only if Government and people wake up to this problem sincerely.
Yours etc…
