KOLKATA: Former Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir passed away here this afternoon. He was 68.
Regarded as one of the brilliant judges in the Supreme Court, Justice Kabir’s end came in a city hospital after prolonged illness, according to Medical Superintendent of Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals Kolkata Dr Partho Bhattacharya.
Ms Anjali Singh, the Hospital spokesperson, told reporters that the end came at 1452 hours. His family and friends were by his side when the end came, Dr Bhattacharya said. The former CJI, a kidney transplant recipient in 2007, was suffering from End Stage Renal Disease, Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Coronary Artery Disease, Post PTCA (2005), Ischemic CVA and Urinary tuberculosis, he said.
He was treated at the hospital multiple times in the past two years. He was admitted again on February 8 with complaints of fever with chills, urinary retention, haematuria and extreme weakness, Dr Bhattacharya said. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condoled the passing away of Justice Altamas Kabir. (AGENCIES)
