Former CJI Dr Anand passes away

JAMMU, Dec 1: Son of the soil and former Chief Justice of India, Justice Dr Adarsh Sein Anand died of cardiac arrest at Noida in Uttar Pradesh this morning. His cremation will be held on December 3 at Lodhi Road Cremation Ground, New Delhi.
Justice Anand (81) is survived by his wife and three daughters.
Born on November 1, 1936 in Jammu, Justice Anand received early education from Model Academy at Jammu and graduated from the then Jammu and Kashmir University in 1958. He did LLB with first class and Diploma in Labour Laws from Lucknow University and Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Laws (Constitutional Law of the Commonwealth) from London University in 1963. He practiced Law in Punjab & Haryana High Court at Chandigarh.
At the age of 38 years, he was appointed as Additional Judge of Jammu and Kashmir High Court on May 26, 1975 and confirmed as a Permanent Judge of the same court in February 1976. He was appointed as Acting Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir High Court on May 26, 1984 and Chief Justice of the same High Court on May 11, 1985.
Thereafter, he was transferred as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Judicature at Madras with effect from November 1, 1989. He was elevated to the Bench of the Supreme Court of India in November 1991.
Dr Anand was appointed as Chief Justice of India on October 10, 1998 and retired on November 1, 2001. He was known for his strictness in judicial matters and exemplary work as the Chairman of National Legal Services Authority. Justice Anand had taken effective steps to establish Lok Adalats in every district of the country.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the demise of Justice. In a condolence message, the PM said, “saddened by the demise of former Chief Justice of India, Justice  AS Anand. My thoughts are with his family in this hour of grief. May his soul rest in peace”.
Governor of J&K N N Vohra has also condoled the demise of Dr A S Anand, whom he had known well for many years. In a message, the Governor has prayed to the Almighty for granting peace to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family to bear this unfortunate loss.
Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti has also expressed grief over the death of former Chief Justice of India and described him as an eminent jurist of the country who considered justice to be a constitutional right.
“Justice Anand would long be remembered for providing inexpensive justice to people”, she said, adding “his judgments on issues of public interest would continue to guide the legal and legislative fraternity to work for the collective good of the society”.
Mehbooba Mufti also recalled the contribution of Justice Anand, a son of the soil, in introducing the concept of Lok Adalats as the Chairman of National Legal Services Authority and also as the Chairman of National Human Rights Commission of India. She has prayed for peace to the departed soul and extended her heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family.
Union Minister of State in PMO Dr Jitendra Singh has also condoled the demise of Dr Anand and said that he will be remembered for his honesty, uprightness and selfless service for the nation for many years to come.
Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad has also expressed his heartfelt condolences on the demise of Dr Anand and termed him as doyen of speedy and efficient justice system in the country.
“I pray that his departed soul may rest in peace and I also offer my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family”, reads the statement issued by Azad.
President of J&K High Court Bar Association Jammu Senior Advocate B S Slathia has also expressed grief over the demise of Justice A S Anand.
