Srinagar, Dec 27: Former Vice Chancellor of University of Kashmir, Professor Hamidi Kashmiri, 86, passed away last night.
Kashmiri was also a noted Urdu and Kashmiri poet and writer. He breathed his last at his residence in Nishat Srinagar. Hundreds of people including writers and poets attended his last rites today.
Kashmiri is credited with 50 books including Iqtishafi Tanqeed Ki Sheryat, Ainame Ibraaq, Mahasir Tanqeed, Riyasati Jammu Aur Kashmir Urdu Adab, Jadeed Kashir Shayeri and Shiekh-ul-Aalam Aur Shayeri.
Kashmiri was a recipient of the Ghalib Award and Sahitya Akademi Award (2005). He was also awarded highest civilian award of Padma Shri in 2010 for his literary works.
Meanwhile, Governor Satya Pal Malik has expressed grief over the sad demise of Prof Hamid Kashmir and prayed for peace to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family in its hour of grief.
Ghulam Nabi Azad, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, has expressed his deep sorrow on the demise of Hamid Kashmiri and said that death of the eminent scholar has created a vacuum in the literary world.
PDP president and former Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti has also condoled the demise of Prof Hamidi Kashmiri. In her condolence message, Mehbooba Mufti recalled the contribution of Prof Hamidi Kashmiri towards literature, particularly Urdu criticism which she said earned him a distinctive place even on the national level.
Former Minister Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari and Vice-President of J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Language, Zafar Iqbal Manhas have also mourned the demise of Prof Hamid Kashmiri.
