JAMMU, July 27: Fortis Escorts Hospital Amritsar has launched its new Obesity Clinic, featuring a comprehensive Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery program.
This initiative, led by Dr Arun K. Sharma, a renowned obesity expert and bariatric surgeon, marks a significant addition to the hospital’s services.
Dr Sharma joins the team after a distinguished career at AIIMS, New Delhi, where he completed his M.Ch and a Fellowship in Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery.
The clinic’s launch was attended by Zonal Director Dr Vishavdeep, Facility Director Yogesh Joshi, and Dr Rajinder Kaur, Director of Anesthesiology.
Dr Sharma introduced his team, which includes a dedicated dietician and psychologist to support patients throughout their weight loss journey.
In a notable case, Dr Sharma and his team successfully performed a Gastric Bypass procedure on a 36-year-old male patient weighing 183 kg with a BMI of 63.5.
The patient had been suffering from Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), chronic knee pain, backache, and difficulty walking. Despite various weight loss methods, including dieting, exercise, and alternative medicines, his condition persisted.
Following initial optimization, the patient underwent the surgery on July 9, 2024, using minimally invasive keyhole techniques.
The surgical team, led by Dr Sharma and supported by Dr Rajinder Kaur’s anesthesia team, navigated the high-risk procedure effectively.
The patient was discharged two days post-operation and is currently progressing well, with a reduced weight of 166 kg. He is expected to lose 1-2 kg per week, approaching his target weight in 9-12 months.
Dr Sharma emphasized that the surgery not only facilitates significant weight loss but also helps maintain a normal weight long-term, with nearly complete resolution of OSA and other related health issues.
Dr Sharma is also available at the Fortis Amritsar Jammu OPD Centre in Trikuta Nagar, where he continues to run the Obesity Clinic and support local patients.
