JAMMU, Dec 11: Four Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Service (JKAS) officers were attacked with stones and verbally abused while investigating a suspected fraud under the MGNREGA scheme in Gharota area the other day.
A police official said that the officers, including Block Development Officers (BDOs) Anjana Sudan, Rishika Shikka, Khalil Ul Rehman, and another officer, were investigating complaints that funds for MGNREGA had been released without any actual work taking place on the ground at Village Chawa.
They were directed by the Deputy Commissioner Jammu, Sachin Kumar Vaishya, to conduct the site visit and submit the inquiry report to the former, said the police official.
“While they were on duty, one Mohammad Afzal, a journalist, arrived and started a verbal altercation with the officers,” he said.
The situation turned violent when Afzal’s associates began throwing stones, endangering the lives of the officers and disrupting their official work, he said.
The officers were rescued thanks to the quick response of BDO Bhalwal, who contacted the police, the police official said.
After the officers filed a written complaint with Police Station Gharota, police have booked Mohammad Afzal and others involved in the crime in case FIR number 109/2024 under sections 121(1), 132, 115(2), 125, and 191 BNS and started further investigation into the matter.
