SRINAGAR, Jan 7: Police today arrested a man for impersonating as a Government official and defrauding a woman of Rs 2 lakh by falsely promising to secure the release of her husband, detained in a drug-related case.
A police spokesperson said Safiya Riyaz, the wife of Riyaz Ahmad Channa, filed a complaint on January 6, accusing Sadiq Hassan Chaloo, a resident of Shaheedgunj in Srinagar of deceit.
“The accused falsely claimed to have influence to secure the release of her husband, who was arrested on November 19, 2024, by Rajbagh Police Station in a narcotics case,” the spokesperson said. He added the woman discovered the fraud when the accused returned only part of the money and refused to refund the remaining amount.
The spokesperson said a case has been registered under Sections 318(4), 319, and 351(2) of the BNS Act, and the accused has been taken into custody. “The investigation is ongoing,” he said.
He said that the complainant’s husband, Riyaz Ahmad Channa, is currently lodged in Sub Jail Baderwah under the PIT NDPS Act.
Meanwhile, police also issued a warning to the public: “Do not fall prey to individuals claiming to have influence over law enforcement authorities. Any such incidents should be reported immediately to the nearest police station or by dialing 112.”
