Freedom fighters pay rich tributes to martyr Uddam Singh

JAMMU, Aug 2: The 74th Martyrdom of freedom fighter Shahid, Uddam Singh was celebrated by Freedom Fighters Association at a function here today.
Shahid Uddam Singh is also popularly known as Ram Rahim Singh. The function in this regard was held at Ved Mandir here which was chaired by Ved Gandotra, president of Freedom Fighters Association J&K.
The gathering paid floral tributes to this great martyr.
The function was presided over by Harinder Singh a social activist while Sham Bhagat was the chief guest on the occasion.
Harinder Singh while throwing light on the life of this great martyr said his childhood name was Sher Singh and he became orphan at a very young age. He said Martyr Uddam Singh was brought up and educated in Amritsar orphanage where he was named as Uddam Singh. Born in village Sonam of Sunana in Punjab on December, 26, 1899, Uddam Singh struggled hard in his life.
He said Uddam Singh was close friend of Shaheed Bhagat Singh , Raj Guru and Sukhdev. He joined Revolutionary Party to avenge the massacre of Jallianwala Bagh in Punjab.
He was in jail when all the martyrs were hanged. After his release from jail, he followed General O Dyre the mastermind of Jallianwala massacre to London as General had left for England after his retirement. He got a job of driver with General and on March 8 in 1940 he killed the General at a public function in England to avenge the killings.
He later on confessed the killing before the Magistrate and disclosed his name as Ram, Rahim, Singh meaning Hindu Muslim and Sikh.
A large number of people attended the function who included Chander Shekhar, Brij Mehra, Mohammed Shafi, Amrik Singh, Gajander Singh, Nitu Ji, Ravi Salgotra, Manjit Singh and others.
