Fresh snow in Kashmir; forecast of heavy snowfall, rains

SRINAGAR, Feb 3: The upper reaches of Kashmir valley tonight experienced fresh snowfall while there was a rain in the plains as Western Disturbance reached the State ahead of its forecast schedule.
Director Meteorological Department, Sonam Lotus, said here that Western Disturbance has reached the State ahead of earlier forecast. Earlier, it was bringing heavy snowfall and rains in the State by Monday afternoon but it is ahead of its forecast schedule time and will bring rains and snow since Sunday evening across Jammu and Kashmir.
Lotus said that there will be moderate rains or snowfall during the night and from Monday morning heavy snowfall is expected across Kashmir. He said that Jammu region will experience heavy rains during next three days. He, however, said that by Thursday weather will improve.
The Weatherman said that snow and rains may disrupt the traffic on the National Highway and air traffic at Srinagar International Airport during next three days. He said that the maximum impact of the Western Disturbance will be in Pir Panjal area of South Kashmir where from the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway passes.
With the overcast weather conditions since yesterday, the night temperatures in Kashmir valley have shown improvement. Srinagar recorded a day temperature of 8.4 Degree Celsius and night temperature of 4.1 Degree Celsius.
Kargil was the coldest place in the region with maximum temperature recorded at minus 4.8 degree Celsius and minimum temperature of minus 10.4 Degree Celsius.
Leh recorded a maximum temperature of 5.6 degree Celsius while minimum of minus 6.4 degree Celsius.
Jammu recorded maximum temperature of 17.6 Degree Celsius while minimum of 9.1 Degree Celsius.
Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force (IAF) today airlifted 41 stranded passengers from the border town of Gurez as dozens of roads to far-flung and remote areas, including those near the Line of Control (LoC) remained closed due to snowfall.
Officials said here that 20 passengers, including a child, were airlifted from Bandipora to Dawar, near LoC in Gurez area while 21 stranded passengers were airlifted from Bandipora to Dawar in Gurez.
Gurez mostly remained cut off from rest of the Kashmir valley due to snowfall. Dozens of villages near the LoC in Keran, Karnah, Tangdhar, Machil, Gurez and Neeru remained cut off from North Kashmir district headquarters of Kupwara and Bandipora.
