Fresh snowfall in Valley’s upper reaches, Amarnath shrine

SRINAGAR, May 12:
The entire Kashmir Valley is under the grip of severe cold, forcing people to wear woolen and warm clothes, because of fresh snowfall on upper reaches and moderate to heavy rains in the plains, including summer capital, Srinagar.
Fresh snowfall was also experienced on all heights in the city outskirts, resulting in drop in the minimum and maximum temperature again.
Upper heights in Harwan, about 22 km from here, had turned white because of fresh snowfall, clearly visible from a distance, including Tailbal and Shalimar.
A Met department spoke-sman said the minimum temperature has dropped in the Valley, where light to moderate rain or thundershowers would occur during the next 24 hours.
He said Srinagar recorded 9.8 mm rainfall till 0830 hrs resulting in drop in the minimum temperature again. Against yesterdays 11 degrees celsius, it was 9 degrees this morning, a notch below normal.
The upper heights in world famous ski resort of Gulmarg also experienced fresh snowfall, resulting two degree drop in the minimum temperature this morning when it was 0.8 degrees, more than three degree below normal. However, Gulmarg ski slopes had rains.
Upper reaches, including near the Line of Control (LoC) also experienced fresh snowfall.
Border town of Keran and Karnah also remained closed since December last year due to accumulation of snow on roads.
The Holy Amarnath cave shrine and its periphery also experienced fresh snowfall. Reports of fresh snowfall were also received from Sheshnag, Mahaguns, Panjterni and Pisso top on traditional Pahalgam- cave route. The annual pilgrimage to holy cave will start from June 25.
Moderate to heavy rains lashed the Valley, disrupting normal life also resulted in drop in the temperature.
Tourist resort of Sonamarg on Srinagar-Kargil-Leh road also experienced light snowfall early this morning. However, the road was through.
A report received from Kargil said traffic on Goma-Kargil road was disrupted after trees were uprooted at several places due to strong winds yesterday.
The upper reaches in border town of Kargil also received fresh snowfall.
Met department has forecast cloudy weather during the next two days in the district. (UNI)
