SRINAGAR : The upper reaches in the Kashmir valley experienced fresh snowfall while plains, including summer capital, Srinagar, were lashed by rain resulting in drop in the mercury. Woolen and warm clothes are out again in the valley as intermittent rain continued for the past 24 hours resulting in cold due to drop in the temperature.
A Met department spokesperson said here this afternoon that there could be light rain or thundershowers at many places over Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours. However, the weather will remain dry during the subsequent four days, he said. Reports reaching here said the world famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir received fresh snowfall.
However, Gulmarg slopes received 23.6 mm rainfall till 0830 hrs resulting in drop in the temperature. He said against yesterdays 6.2 degree minimum temperature, it was 4.6 degree which still was above normal. There were still dark clouds along with intermittent rains. Hundreds of tourists are arriving at the ski resort from different parts of the country and abroad daily, a hotel owner told UNI over phone.
However, the guests had to wear warm and woolen clothes being provided by local traders due to chilly winds since they had come from different areas where the mercury had crossed 40 degree. A report said holy Amarnath cave shrine and its periphery and Sheshnag, Mahaguns and Pisso top experienced fresh snowfall.
However, 9.2 mm rainfall was recorded at famed health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir. But there was no change in the minimum temperature there, he said. The summer capital, Srinagar, witnessed more than two degree drop in the maximum and minimum temperatures during the past 24 hours.
Met spokesperson said due to rain yesterday, the maximum temperature dropped and settled at 20.5 degree, two notches below normal, forcing people to wear warm and woolen clothes. The city witnessed 9.6 mm rainfall with the result the minimum temperature also dropped from 13.4 degree yesterday to 10.9 degree today.
He said there could be light rain or thundershowers and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 20 degree and 11 degree, respectively in the city during the next 24 hours. Qazigund, the gateway of Kashmir recorded 11.7 degree against yesterday’s 12.7 degree, Kokernag 10.3 degree against yesterday’s 11.4 degree and Kupwara 10.5 degree against 13.3 degree yesterday.
The frontier district Kupwara recorded highest 29.2 mm rainfall during the night, he said. Weather remained dry in border town of Kargil while 0.4 mm rainfall was recorded at Leh in Ladakh region, he added. At Kargil the minimum temperature was 5.9 degree against yesterday’s 6.1 degree and Leh 8.1 degree against 9 degree recorded yesterday. (AGENCIES)
