Fresh WD approaching J&K

SRINAGAR, Jan 13:
More trouble is in store for the people of Jammu and Kashmir as fresh Western Disturbances (WD) is approaching the region which would affect the region for three days from January 16.
As the Sun remained behind the clouds coupled with icy cold winds, people continued to shiver as day temperature was three to four degrees below normal and minimum was above normal in the Kashmir valley and Ladakh region.
A Met Department spokesman said here this afternoon that there could be light to moderate rain or snow at few places over Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours.
However, as a fresh WD, originating in Arabian sea is approaching the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan.
WD will affect the region for three days from January 16, he said.
He added that due to cloudy sky coupled with icy cold winds, the maximum temperature dropped, forcing people to remain indoor.
Srinagar recorded 3.5 degrees celsius maximum temperature yesterday which was three degree below normal. Today it was no different as cold wave continued.
However, the minimum was 1.6 degrees, four notches above normal, he said.
He has forecast that tomorrow the maxium will improve while the minimum will drop tomorrow as the sky will remain clear.
At world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, there was considerable improvement in the manimum temperature after fresh snowfall yesterday.
The Met spokesman said it was minus 4.2 degrees, four degree above normal at the ski resort, major tourist attraction in winter, where a number of skii courses are going on.
Pahalgam, a health resort in south Kashmir, also witnessed increase in the minimum temperature. Against normal of minus 8 degrees, it was minus 0.2 degrees because of cloudy sky during the night.
However, the day remained cold at both the tourist places.
Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir, recorded 1.7 degrees, two degree above normal while Kokernag it was 0.3 degrees and Kupwara minus 0.2 degrees, also above normal.
A number of roads to far flung and remote areas, including those near the Line of Control (LoC) remained closed due to heavy snowfall. However, some roads connecting villages with their respective district headquarters were cleared.
People in Ladakh region, which remained cut off from the rest of the state due to closure of the national highway following heavy snowfall, continued to shiver though there was some improvement in the minimum temperature.
At Leh, the minimum temperature was minus 10.2 degrees, an improvement of about three notches against yesterday while Kargil, a border town, recorded minus 10.7 degrees against yesterday minus 17.4 degrees. (UNI)
