Fresh WD to hit J&K on Wed

SRINAGAR, Feb 13:
A fresh Western Disturbance (WD) is likely to hit Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, which could result in moderate to heavy snowfall in upper reaches though plains will receive only intermittent rains.
However, night remained chilly in the Valley. Regional Meteorological Department director Sonam Lotus said that a fresh WD, originating in Arabian sea and entering the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan, will hit the State on Wednesday.
However, he said this WD will not have much impact in the plains, which would receive intermittent rain from Thursday evening though upper reaches will receive moderate to heavy snowfall.
“This WD is not as strong as the previous ones, which hit the region since January, resulting in heavy snowfall. It will result in intermittent rains in the plains from Thursday evening till Sunday,” Mr Lotus said.
Meanwhile, people continued to enjoy summer-like weather conditions during the day though night temperature remained below freezing point. Leh in Ladakh region was the coldest place in the region after mercury further dipped and settled at minus 16.1 degrees, against minus 14.7 degrees recorded yesterday.
A MeT department spokesperson said sky would be mainly clear during the next 24 hours in Leh, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 2 degrees and minus 14 degrees respectively.
Even though there was no change in the night temperature in world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, where the slopes area under over 10 feet of snow, it was still the coldest place in the Valley at minus 7.6 degrees.
The night temperature at Gulmarg is about two notches below normal. After witnessing below normal night temperature, people woke up to yet another sunny morning in the summer capital Srinagar. Against minus 2.6 degrees recorded yesterday, the night temperature was minus 2.2 degrees, which is about 3 degrees below normal.
The temperature further improved in Srinagar yesterday during the day and settled at 13 degree, which is four notches above normal.
The spokesperson said sky would be partially cloudy during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 12 degrees and minus two degrees respectively.
The mercury at world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100-km from here in South Kashmir, dipped and settled at minus 6.5 degrees, against minus 6 degrees recorded yesterday.
The night temperature at Qazigund, the gateway to Kashmir valley, on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, further improved and settled at minus 1.6 degrees, against minus 2.2 degrees recorded yesterday.
The temperature was still below normal.  However, Kupwara in North Kashmir witnessed a dip in the night temperature after mercury plunged and settled at minus 4.5 degrees, against minus 4.2 degrees recorded yesterday.
Another health resort, Kokernag, also witnessed some improvement in the night temperature. Against minus 0.9 degrees recorded yesterday, the night temperature was minus 0.4 degrees, which is about two notches above normal. (UNI)
