Gale uproots trees, blows away roofs in Kashmir

Srinagar, May 10: Rains coupled with gale lashed many places in Kashmir disrupting normal life as trees were uprooted at many places while around two dozen roofs of houses were blown off in North Kashmir.
Strong winds hit parts of north Kashmir including Baramulla district uprooting trees and causing damage to the property including residential houses. However, there was no report of any injuries.
An official said that roofs of around two dozen houses were blown away by gale that struck parts of Kashmir.
Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir valley experience intermittent light rain, gale and thundershowers disrupting normal life as in few areas’ trees were uprooted blocking the traffic. At Tapper in Baramulla district, National Highway remained blocked due to a tree fall caused by gale. However, it was later removed and traffic was restored.
A Meteorological Department official said that a Western Disturbance (WD) will likely hit and trigger light to moderate rain over plains and snow over the higher reaches of Kashmir valley during the weekend.
“Light rain, thundershowers, and gusty winds occur over many places of north and northwestern, south and central parts of Kashmir and Poonch, Rajouri, and Banihal in Jammu division on Friday,” it said.
He said the weather will remain partly to generally cloudy with light to moderate rain/snow (over higher reaches) at many places coupled with thunder, lightning, and gusty winds, hailstorm, and lightening at a few places in Kashmir valley during the weekend.
“On May 13 the weather will remain partly to generally cloudy with light rain at a few places, while from May 14-18, the weather will generally remain dry,” he said.
