JAMMU, May 5: Government has decided to start courses in two new Government Engineering Colleges coming up in Ganderbal district of Kashmir and Kathua district of Jammu division from this year.
The announcement was made today by the Minister for Education, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari at an event organized by Government College for Engineering and Technology (GCET) to celebrate its annual day.
Minister of State for Education, Priya Sethi was guest of honour at the function which witnessed scintillating performances by young engineering students featuring a mix of modern and folk music and dance.
“We are in process of starting two colleges one at Safapura in Ganderbal, Kashmir and another in Kathua of Jammu division and start the courses in these new professional institutions from this year”, the Minister announced.
“Two days back, me and my colleague and a team of Education Department held a meeting with officials of Ministry of Human Resource Development and it was decided to start the courses in these colleges from this year”, Altaf Bukhari informed further.
Meanwhile, on the demand of the GCET management, the Minister also announced an auditorium, college canteen and permanent warden post for the Engineering College. He reiterated the Government’s resolve to take the education sector in the State to new heights, adding Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti is keen to see State becoming a hub of education.
Minister of State for Education, Priya Sethi listed the steps taken by the Government to rejuvenate education sector. She said transparency and accountability have been made benchmark for working of all public institutions and services.
Earlier, Dr. Sameru Sharma, Principal, GCET presented a welcome address followed by the presentation of annual report.
The annual report included exemplary academic performance of the students and the participation of the faculty members in various seminars, workshops and conferences in the field of Science & Technology especially the innovative projects designed by the students of GCET under the Research & Development Cell of GCET. The report also encased the Campus Placement scenario of GCET students in various National/ Multinational companies viz., Wipro, TCS, Capgemini, Accenture, Tech Aspect, and Indian Navy.
Director Colleges, Renu Goswami, Director School Education, Ravinder Singh, Principals from various Technical/Degree Colleges and reputed dignitaries of Jammu region were also present to grace the occasion.
On this occasion, Anjali Thusoo was honoured for her outstanding services to GCET during her tenure as Training and Placement Officer, thus, paving the way for providing a platform to the students of GCET for Campus Placements in highly reputed corporate companies.
The college also brought out an e-magazine on the occasion and felicitated the students who achieved excellence in academics, sports and other co-curricular activities.
So far nineteen batches have passed out from GCET, while four batches are presently pursuing courses in different streams.
The function witnessed series of performances which enthralled the jam packed audience. The main attraction of the cultural fest was singing performance by of GCET Hostel warden, Er Dubey who left the audience spellbound with his melodious voice.
