Gandhi image on beer cans: Russian brewery apologises

THIRUVANTAPURAM, Feb 26: Russian-based ‘Rewort Brewery’ on Wednesday apologised for using Mahatma Gandhi’s image on their beer cans and bottles and promised to stop producing such products and recall the rest from sale.
The company expressed apology after receiving a letter from Eby J Jos, Chairman of Mahatma Gandhi National Foundation at Pala in Kerala, who termed the act of Rewort Brewery using a photo and signature of Mahatma Gandhi to sell their products as “disrespectful, insulting and improper conduct” on the part of the concern.
Earlier, the use of Mahatma Gandhi’s image on beer cans and bottles by the ‘Rewort Brewery’ triggered a controversy.
In a letter, the Rewort Brewery official said “I will give an excerpt from the description of this variety to prove that our intentions were purely good – “We dedicated this bright style of beer to Mahatma Gandhi, a man whose life was spent in a tireless struggle for the independence of his own people.”
“Understanding the current situation, about a year ago we renamed our beer variety, now only one chain has a small amount of this variety, and it will definitely run out soon.”
“For our part, we promise that we have long since stopped producing products that are offensive to you and will try to recall the rest from sale.”
“On behalf of the entire Rewort Brewery team, we express our deepest respect to you and your friendly people and once again apologize for the inconvenience caused to you, this will not happen again!”, the official added.
Earlier, Eby J Jos said “Mahatma Gandhi is regarded as the Father of the Nation (India). A forerunner of the freedom struggle that led India to independence from the British occupation through peaceful method of Sathyagrah (agitation) through non-violance. People around the globe view Mahatma Gandhi and his work with great respect.”
He said Gandhiji’s words of wisdom are valued by the people of India. Gandhi once answered a question related to alcohol: “I would rather close down the liquor shops in India within an hour if I am at the helm of affairs.”
“He was a man who had taken a rigid stand against alcohol throughout his life. No liquor outlet will be opened across India, either on his birth anniversary or his death anniversary,” Jos added. (UNI)
