Government Hospital in Gandhi Nagar Jammu has become the first district hospital in the entire Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir in having got two seats for Diplomate of National Board (DNB) course in Department of Medicine. It may be recalled that the DNB is a medical qualification and treated equivalent to the postgraduate and post doctoral programme. All those who have already completed their MBBS courses are eligible for this course.
With this, shortage of specialist doctors would be overcome to a large extent. So far, SKIMS Soura, two Government Medical Colleges and one private Medical College in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir were having the facilities for the DNB courses. While it is a welcome step taken by the concerned authorities of the National Board of Examination, New Delhi, at the same time in order to give a boost to and improve upon the medical services, district hospitals in the UT needed to be strengthened in various ways under well designed policies and programmes. We expect, after the preliminary preparations and inspection related formalities were completed in respect of District Hospitals at Udhampur, Poonch, LNM Hospital Srinagar, Pulwama, Kupwara, Ganderbal, Kulgam and five new GMCs of Jammu and Kashmir, sanction for the DNB seats would be accorded for them too shortly. Likewise, strength of nursing staff and bedding capacity too were proposed to be increased shortly in these district hospitals. In fact, we need to go in for doing more in the health sector in this UT while a lot surely is being done within available resources.
