JAMMU, June 1: Gandhi Global Family, J&K, and Gandhi Peace Foundation, Jammu Chapter, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with 17 schools of Jammu region to initiate the implementation of United Nations `Sustainable Development Goals’, laid by the member States in 2015.
They agreed upon organizing awareness among students regarding the specific goal allotted to them. These include, chalking out a calendar of activities like Symposiums on Truth & Non Violence, UN Quiz and painting competitions twice every month, celebrating important UN International Days, adopting a village/locality within vicinity (comprising of people of weaker sections) to carry out community development programs and disseminate the knowledge regarding UN SDGs.
Besides this, the schools also agreed upon setting up of “Mahatma Gandhi Peace Club ” under the aegis of GPF & GGF, to carry out the identified activities. Further, each school was allotted one goal through the draw of lots, like ‘Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions’ to KC Public School , ‘ Good Health & Well -Being’ to Tiny Tots Sr Sec School , ‘Sustainable Cities & Communities to Oriental Academy, `Quality Education’ to Shangrilla Public School , `No Poverty’ to Alexander Memorial School , ‘Affordable & Clean Energy’ to J K Montessori School , ‘Responsible Consumption & Production’ to S D Tarapuri Public School , ‘Reduced Inequalities’ to J K Police School , ‘Life Below Water’ to Model Academy , ‘Clean Water & Sanitation’ to Jodhamal Public School, ‘Life on Land’ to Heritage School , ‘ Partnership for the Goals’ to K C International School , ‘Zero Hunger’ to G D Goenka School , ‘Industry Innovation & Infrastructure to Shiksha Niketan Sr Sec School, ‘Decent Work & Economic Growth ‘to Lawrence Public School .
On the occasion of signing of MoU, Padamshree SP Verma, president J&K Chapter, threw light on the millennium developmental goals and also focused upon the strategies and the mechanisms to take these goals forward. He informed that this is the second group of schools after Delhi to take up the task of implementation of SDGs and be partners towards such a noble cause.
Dr Seema Rohmetra, Coordinator GPF , Jammu Chapter, apprised the representatives of the various schools about the action plan, to be undertaken immediately and effectively after the reopening of the schools after summer break.
Principal KC Public School, Mr Mishra presented the welcome address. Shobna Sethi and Sonia Thakur coordinated and conducted the proceedings of the event.
