SRINAGAR, Apr 7: Unattended garbage along Pulwama ring road in South Kashmir has created nuisance for the residents, shopkeepers and students in the area as heaps of garbage pose a serious threat to their health.

Although there are heaps of unattended garbage strewn about the road, the dump near the Government Women’s Degree College is especially dangerous because the foul odour it emits poses a serious threat to the health of students.
“There is a Government women’s college about 10-15 meters from the dumping site, and the students are suffering greatly. If no immediate action is taken to address the problem, it will become a health hazard for the entire population,” a local said, adding that waste dumping has rendered a newly constructed commercial shopping complex obsolete.
Residents alleged that all household garbage is dumped in an empty patch among orchards, endangering the ecosystem. Residents believe that the government should implement a scientific method for recycling household garbage in order to reduce the risk to human health.
“The trash attracts stray dogs and birds, which can be seen looking for food in the trash and endangering passers-by,” another resident said. He continued that stray cows that roam the area ingest plastic and other harmful materials, causing serious ailments to their intestines and stomach.
Municipal officials, according to residents, have failed to remove the waste on a regular basis, causing serious problems for the entire population of these areas. The area has been transformed into a virtual garbage dump, with debris piles posing health risks. “The foul odour emanating from the garbage is causing significant problems for people, especially the elderly, who are having difficulty in breathing,” residents said.
