‘Mehbooba dubbed anti-national, supporter of separatists’

Srinagar, Feb 9: Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s “ability to garner votes even during peak of militancy and separatist poll boycotts” is one of the grounds for his detention under Public Safety Act (PSA).
And making anti-national statements and extending support to organisations such as the Jamaat-e-Islamia that is now banned, is ground for another former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s detention under the controversial law.
Both the former Chief Ministers against whom the PSA was invoked three days ago were taken into preventive custody in early August last year ahead of abrogation of Article 370 of Constitution and bifurcation of erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh.
The dossier against Omar said that his detention was warranted for his considerable influence over people and ability to garner support for any cause. “The capacity of the subject to influence people for any cause can be gauged from the fact that he was able to convince his electorate to come out and vote in huge numbers even during peak of militancy and poll boycotts,” it added.
Ironically, NC general secretary, Ali Mohammad Sagar’s dossier also includes “his ability to disturb the public order can be gauged from that he succeeded in mobilising voters in the peak of militancy and poll boycotts.”
The dossier accused Omar of favouring radical thoughts which he has turned into actions.
Other charges against him include his opposition to the Centre’s decision to abrogate Article 370 and “instigating people on Twitter against the unity and integrity of the nation”. However, Omar has no such posts on his twitter. In fact he called for peace and calm before his arrest.
The last tweet of Omar read: “While I’ve been focused on Kashmir I must add a word for people in Kargil, Ladakh & Jammu. I’ve no idea what is in store for our State but it doesn’t look good. I know many of you will be upset by what unfolds. Please don’t take the law into your own hands, please stay calm.”
“Violence will only play into the hands of those who do not have the best interests of the State in mind. This wasn’t the India J&K acceded to but I’m not quite ready to give up hope yet. Let calm heads prevail. God be with you all”, his last tweet further read.
The dossier says the former Chief Minister is using politics as a cover for planning activities against the Union Government. It said “despite the fact that the subject has been a mainstream politician, he has been planning his activities against the Union of India under the guise of politics. And while enjoying the support of gullible masses, he has been successful in execution of such activities”.
The dossier said Omar resorted to “dirty politics and radical methodology” after the abrogation of 370. “After revocation of Article 370 and Article 35A, in order to secure support of common people, the subject removed all covers / curtains and while resorting to his dirty politics has adopted a radical methodology by way of instigating general masses against the policies of Central Government,” it added.
Omar was taken into custody ahead of abrogation of Article 370 and how could he instigate people after the scrapping of Article 370.
Another ground for his detention under PSA is his popularity among people: “The subject is a popular figure among masses and has tremendous potential for diverting energy of common people for any cause”, read the dossier.
Under PSA, Omar Abdullah can be detained for three months without a trial and it can later be extended as was done in case of Kashmir Bar Association president Mian Abdul Qayoom.
And a six-page dossier listing the grounds for the detention of former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said she was issuing anti-national statements and was working with separatists.
She has been accused of making anti-national statements and extending support to organisations such as the Jamaat-e-Islamia of J&K, which has been banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The dossier mentioned Mufti’s tweets prior to the revocation of Article 370, on lynching and highway blockade, among others.
It also said that the PDP’s flag and symbol of inkpot and pen is a replica of the sign used by the Muslim United Front (MUF) during the 1987 J&K elections.
Mehbooba’s statement on security forces killing militants was also made a part of the PSA dossier against her.
“The green colour of the PDP’s flag reflected the radical origin of the same,” the dossier read.
It stated the mindset of Mehbooba Mufti can be figured from the following tweets which she has been making on social networking sites showing her instigating bent of mind:
On August 5, 2019 she stated: “That the abrogation of Article 370 has not just made accession null and void and also reduces India to an occupation force in J&K.”
On the same day, she stated, “once the Government of India had pushed Kashmiris to the brink, there is no other way but to oppose this illegal and unconstitutional onslaught on our dignity.”
The dossier read the vitriolic and mischievous instigation can be gauged from her following tweets based on nothing but blatant lies aimed at demoralizing security forces.
“Every human even a militant deserves dignity after death. Armed forces’ use of chemicals in encounters disfiguring their bodies is inhuman. Imagine the emotions that’ll overcome a boy who sees his brother’s mutilated charred body. Won’t you be surprised if he picks up a gun.”
It stated that Mehbooba Mufti is referred for her dangerous and insidious mechanicians and usurping profile and nature by the masses as “daddy’s girl” and “Kota Rani”. Based on the profile of a historical medieval queen of Kashmir who rose to power by virtue of taking intrigues ranging from the poisoning of her opponents.
It further stated her divisive approach and potential and its spillover to other parts of the country are reflected by her following pronouncements.
“Fail to understand the need to pass the triple talaq bill especially since the Supreme Court had already declared it illegal. Undue interference seemingly to punish Muslims. Given the state of the economy should this really been a priority.”
Mehbooba is lodged at a Government building on M A Road while Omar is detained at Hari Niwas in Srinagar. Former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah is detained at his residence, which has been designated as a sub-jail. And PDP leaders Naeem Akhtar and Sartaj Madni and NC leader Ali Mohammad Sagar are lodged at M-5 Gupkar in Srinagar.
