SRINAGAR, Aug 4: The Group of Concerned Citizens (GCC), J&K—a non-political civil society comprising former civil servants, academicians, doctors, advocates, retired Judges, medicos and activists, has called upon the Government to ensure that no solid waste is left behind on Amarnath Yatra routes and adjoining areas to protect the environment and ecology of the pristine mountain systems and surrounding forests.
In a statement here today the GCC focused on the need to protect all water bodies on Yatra routes from solid waste contamination and pollution besides protecting the rare flora and fauna in the mountain system on both routes.
“All solid waste left behind by Yatris, people on Yatra duty, labourers etc should be collected and brought down for appropriate disposal in landfills and recycling,” a handout of GCC stated appealing the local population living downstream of Lidder upto Pahalgam- Khanabal area and at Baltal-Sonamarg-Ganderbal besides the stretch upto Sumbal (where Sindh meets Jehlum) to lend a helping hand to the local administration in this noble cause by carrying out solid waste removal measures on voluntary basis and in an organized manner also in the best spirit of service to society.
