GCC’s concern over delay in restoration of Statehood

Srinagar, Dec 22: While urging the Government of India to respect the “aspirations of the people,” the Group of Concerned Citizens (GCC) J&K today expressed concerns over the delay in the restoration of Statehood to J&K.
In a statement issued here, the GCC cautioned against the adverse “fall-out” of the “dual control” on the quality of governance in J&K.
“The scheme of dual control is a recipe for disjointed governance,” it said.
The GCC said that the people of J&K have “undeservingly suffered” from a lack of a representative Government for over six years.
It said that the Government of India must respect the democratic “aspirations” of the people and “restore full Statehood.”
“Only then can the newly elected Government be held accountable to deliver on their legitimate demands, expectations, and aspirations,” the statement issued by Secretary GCC J&K read.
The GCC further said that any more delay “will be counter-productive and not in the larger interest of J&K and the country.”
“By restoring Statehood, the Union Government will be restoring to the people their right to have a responsible, responsive, and duly empowered Government.”
The group appealed to the Union Government not to hold back the Statehood restoration any longer “in view of the direction of the Supreme Court, calling for restoration of Statehood at the earliest.”
The GCC reaffirmed its faith in the assurances held out by the Prime Minister and Home Minister in the Parliament, while urging all political parties to seek the restoration of Statehood for J&K.
