GDA launches massive anti-polythene, anti-pollution drive

SRINAGAR, July 6: The Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA) initiated a comprehensive anti-polythene and anti-pollution drive today to boost environmental awareness and cleanliness in the Tangmarg area of Gulmarg.
A spokesperson for the GDA said that the day-long campaign combined both awareness efforts and actionable steps and saw robust participation from multiple departments,” The participants including the Executive Officer of Tangmarg Municipality, the Gulmarg Station House Officer (SHO), GDA officials, the Inspector of the Motor Vehicle Department, and the Forest Protection Force,” he said.
He said the drive began in Tangmarg, with GDA Chief Executive Officer Waseem Raja leading the charge in raising on-road awareness among drivers, passengers, and tourists. ” Raja said maintaining Gulmarg’s pristine environment is crucial, highlighting the harmful impact of polythene in the eco-sensitive region. He urged both locals and tourists to avoid using polythene in Gulmarg,” he said.
He said the inspection team conducted rigorous vehicle checks to ensure pollution certificates were up-to-date and educated tourists about the polythene ban and associated penalties. During the campaign, hundreds of vehicles were inspected, resulting in fines totaling Rs 85,000 for various infractions. “Tangmarg Police seized five vehicles with expired fitness certificates and those emitting excessive smoke under Section 129,” the spokesperson said.
He said the drive continued in Gulmarg, where the GDA, in collaboration with the Tangmarg and Gulmarg Municipal Committee, carried out a cleanliness initiative at the Children’s Park. He added that SHO Gulmarg Haroon Kar participated, as volunteers focused on cleaning the park and removing polythene and plastic waste scattered throughout the area.
