KATHUA, May 19: Government Degree College for Women, Kathua organised a national seminar on the topic “Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction: Making Sustainability a Way of Life”, here today.
Distinguished subject experts were invited from all parts of India, who included Dr Harish Chander Dutt from Department of Botany, University of Jammu; Dr Shveta Yadav from Department of EVS, Central University of Jammu and Nodal officer Mission Life; Dr Harvinder Khera, Research Scientist Tata Institute for Genetics and Society, Bangaluru and Dr Prasanjit Acharya, Assistant Professor, Department of Geography Vidyasagar University West Bengal, India.
The conference attracted 60 abstracts from the Research Scholars and teachers from all around India.
Dr Savi Behl, Principal of the college, gave a brief description about the theme of the seminar and hoped that it would provide a platform to bring eminent scholars under one umbrella to foster academic and scientific advancement in a variety of research areas related to the environment and climate change. She informed that the theme was chosen out of the G-20’s themes to highlight the public issues related to health, development of economic, social and political agendas.
The chief guest for the inaugural session was S Rakesh Kumar, Director Department of Environment and Remote Sensing UT of J&K. In his address, he emphasised that the target of the Government of India is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2070 and in J&K village Palli has been declared as carbon neutral.
Dr Anupma Gupta, Principal GDC Mahreen; Dr Alka Sharma, Principal GDC Billawar and Dr Sangeeta Sudan, Principal GDC Mahanpur were present in the seminar. The e-abstarct book was released by Prof Pankaj Nandan, Associate Professor, GDC for Women, Kathua.
Two parallel technical sessions were conducted. These were chaired by Dr Netar Singh, former Principal GDC, Kathua and Dr M S Pathania , former Principal GDC for Women, Kathua respectively.
The chief guest of the valedictory session was Ankur Mahajan, Additional District Development Commissioner, Kathua. The seminar report was presented by Dr Naresh Sharma, Organising secretary of the seminar and formal vote of thanks was given by Prof Ashwani Khajuria, Convener Science Club.
