Srinagar, Sept 1:Senior separatist leader and chairman of hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, was re-elected as chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat party for a term of three years. A party spokesman said here that Geelani got 590 votes out of 669 votes polled while Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai got 66 votes in the elections that were held at party headquarters here today. Geelani formed Tehreek-e-Hurriyat in August 2004 after his parent party Jamat-e-Islami allowed him to form the party to pursue with the separatist politics. He is the chairman of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat since its inception. Geelani was later expelled from Jamat-e-Islami in 2010 after his biography “Quaid-e-Inquilab-A history, a movement” written by Dr Shafi Shariati criticised the leaders of Jamat. Geelani tenure as the chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir expired yesterday and Majlis-e-Shoura (advisory council) re-elected him today as chairman with thumping majority.
