‘General Category people biggest victim of caste-based discrimination’

JAMMU, Jan 6: Stating that the people of General Category (GC) are biggest victim of case based discrimination in J&K, chairman, General Category People’s Forum (GCPF), Jammu, Raj Kumar Banathia stressed upon the Government to take legal steps to undo the injustices done with GC people in the name of social justice.
Addressing a meeting of the Forum, Banathia condemned the continuous neglect and suppression of GC people which included Hindu, Muslims, Sikhs and others by political partners, denying them their legitimate rights of equality, justice, liberty, dignity and equal opportunities through case-based discrimination and by restricting the application of Articles 14, 15, 16 and 21. He also urged upon the Union Government to end political reservation as it debars about 30 crore people from their “Right to be Elected’.
President of the Forum, Yash Paul Sanson, stressed upon the Government to undertake legal task of restoring a place of equality, justice, dignity and equal opportunities for all by abolishing case-based discrimination. He also pleaded for continuation of Union Territory status of J&K at least for next few years or till the peace becomes a permanent feature in J&K.
Som Nath Sharma, general secretary of the Forum appealed the Central Government to notify ‘minorities’ of various states/UTs and amend the constitution for providing benefits of various Central and State welfare schemes to actual minorities.
“Discrimination against GC people has crossed all limits. It is now causing unrest among them in the country and has the potential of changing fate of political parties,” VK Sharma and Bhushan Pargal (both vice-presidents) said and warned the political parties not the take General Category voters for granted.
On the occasion, a resolution was passed unanimously demanding special privileges, concessions and other supportive measures for upliftment of ‘Poor Caste’ and full exemption in Income Tax to all pensioners and senior citizens.
