Srinagar, Nov 5: In a major jolt to National Conference (NC) in Ganderbal, senior party leader and Member Legislative Council (MLC), Sheikh Ghulam Rasool, resigned today from the party membership.
Sheikh, the former Chief Secretary of the State, who played key role in Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s victory in 2008 Assembly polls, cited the lack of consultation in the party over state affairs and orgnisational matters of Ganderbal. “I had the privilege to be what you described as ‘architect of your success in Ganderbal in 2008 with landslide majority as against the humiliating defeat of 2002.During your stewardship of past six years, I again did not get occasion even of consultative nature either in state affairs or in Ganderbal matters — organisational or administrative,” he wrote in his resignation letter addressed to Omar.
The MLC revealed in his letter that he rejected the party mandate to contest elections from Ganderbal as the party affairs in the constituency have deteriorated and people are alienated.”As the party affairs in Ganderbal have deteriorated and people alienated, I could not accept the party mandate to contest election in Ganderbal offered by Dr Farooq (Abdullah) and you through senior party leaders few days back,” he wrote.
While concluding his letter, Sheikh wrote that he resigns from primary membership of the party and central working committee. “Keeping in view these factors and overall situation of the party, I am of the considered opinion that it is time for me to dissociate myself completely from the party and accordingly I resign from the primary membership of the party and as a member of the central working committee,” he added.
The resignation of Sheikh is likely to join the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in a couple of days. His resignation is a major setback for the NC as already two of its former leaders have filed nominations as an independent and Congress candidates.
