JAMMU, April 4: General secretary, Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) Jammu, Gaurav Gupta today said that Basohli paintings from Kathua district have made history by becoming the first product from Jammu Province to receive GI tagging.
Gupta said that this has become possible with the relentless efforts of Jammu and Kashmir Administration led by the Lt Governor Manoj Sinha towards getting the (Geographical Indication) GI tagging of the products of Jammu. He said that Jammu’s product has made history by becoming the first product from the Province to receive GI tagging.
“This achievement will undoubtedly go a long way in boosting the local folk art which is unique in the world. It will attract more youth to take up this art as a profession to boost their economy besides promoting the cultural heritage of the region,” Gupta asserted, in a statement issued to media.
The CCI Jammu general secretary said that GI tagging of products was a long pending demand of the people of Jammu especially the business class and the CCI Jammu had been pursuing the matter since long and with the Basohli Paintings GI tagging the efforts have finally borne dividend.
He said that this is just the beginning as there are multiple products from Jammu region that deserve to be granted GI tag and the Chamber appeals to the Lt Governor to further intensify the efforts of the UT Administration so that all the unique products of this region are granted the Geographical Indication tag at the earliest.
